This 3-hour live interactive ethics seminar addresses the critical intersection of affective neuroscience, power dynamics, and professional ethics in trauma treatment. This program examines how un-titrated trauma interventions, unexamined power differentials, and failure to account for systemic oppression can induce acute autonomic dysregulation and iatrogenic retraumatization. Psychologists will learn to translate neurobiological principles and intersectional trauma frameworks into an active risk-reduction strategy that prioritizes physiological stabilization, cultural attunement, collaborative informed consent, and client autonomy.
The program utilizes a dynamic, interactive seminar format combining didactic instruction, case vignette analysis, and live instructor demonstrations. Dr. Tori Olds shows a recorded role-play demonstration illustrating slow, titrated clinical pacing, somatic resourcing, and real-time de-escalation of autonomic dysregulation, explicitly highlighting how to navigate therapist-client power dynamics. Participants engage in interactive case discussions designed to map out four trauma-related countertransference patterns (e.g., rescue fantasies, clinical avoidance, therapeutic pressure, or cultural misattunement) and practice applying consultation frameworks to resolve complex ethical dilemmas involving identity, systemic trauma, and clinical boundaries.
Target Audience: Licensed Psychologists, Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs), Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), and health service professionals in mental health.
Instructional Level: Intermediate to Advanced (Prerequisite: Master’s or Doctoral degree in a mental health field and active clinical licensure/practice).
Instructor Bio & Credentials: Dr. Tori Olds is a licensed psychologist with over 26 years of clinical experience specializing in trauma resolution, interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB), and experiential psychotherapy.
For this program on Ethical Trauma Treatment, Dr. Olds draws upon her extensive background in affective neuroscience and trauma-informed clinical care. Over her 13 years of training mental health professionals internationally, she has specialized in teaching practitioners how to safely navigate the deep emotional processing required in trauma therapy. Her expertise bridges empirical neurobiology with strict clinical ethics, ensuring therapists can facilitate profound, bottom-up change while maintaining rigorous clinical boundaries, mitigating iatrogenic risk, and safeguarding highly vulnerable client populations.

Learning Objectives:
Analyze how trauma induces chronic dysregulation within the autonomic nervous system, explaining how overly directive clinical approaches can inadvertently cause psychological harm.
Define the concept of the "trauma vortex" and utilize neurobiologically informed principles to safely de-escalate traumatic activation.
Identify and differentiate four common countertransference reactions that occur when working with traumatized populations.
Formulate an ethical risk-reduction framework by classifying potential clinical boundary errors as either a failure to decrease perceived threat or a failure to cultivate sufficient somatic resources.

The Depth Institute is committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based training. If a participant is dissatisfied with a continuing education program or experiences an unavoidable scheduling conflict, we offer the following options:
Asynchronous (On-Demand) Courses: Due to the immediate delivery of digital materials, refunds are not issued once a participant has logged into the course portal or streamed content. If a course is purchased in error and the learning platform has not been accessed, a full refund (minus a 5% administrative fee) may be requested within 14 days of purchase.
Live / Synchronous Virtual Events: Cancellations made by the participant in writing at least fourteen (14) days prior to the event start date will receive a full refund (minus a 5% administrative fee). Cancellations made less than fourteen (14) days prior are not eligible for a monetary refund, but the participant may apply their registration fee as a credit toward a future Depth Institute program. This credit must be redeemed within one (1) calendar year.
No-Shows: Participants who fail to attend a live event without prior written notice ("no-shows") are not eligible for a refund or course credit.
Institutional Cancellations: In the rare event that The Depth Institute must cancel or postpone a scheduled program due to instructor illness, technical outages, or unforeseen circumstances, all registered participants will be notified immediately in writing and issued a 100% full refund to their original method of payment.
